Do You Actually Have Foundation Issues in Your House?

A foundation problem is the worst kind of issue that a homeowner can face. The house owner feels helpless because he or she does not know many things about construction and foundation repair. People get anxious when they hear about foundations because foundation repair is very expensive and time-consuming. But this is not always the case. That’s why we have discussed a few signs which will indicate to you whether the affair is real or false.

The Actual Signs of Foundation Problems

  • Separation of Exterior Trim

In this condition, you may notice the separation of wood trim work in the brick frieze. Trim boards lose hold of original placement points and ruin the exterior wall if the exterior wall moves.

  • Diagonal Cracks on Interior Walls

You may notice diagonal cracks in drywall which are located in the door and window frames. A part of the wall is pushed up or down due to settlement forces and causes cracking in the wallboard.

  • Evidence of Movement on Other Inside Fixtures

Backsplash and countertop separation can be seen in the bathroom and kitchen tile lines. If the floor or wall moves, then it may create a gap between tilework and countertops where wall tile meets another surface.

The False Signs

  • Large and Small Ceiling Cracks

This is one of the most common false signs that are very similar to the foundation problem. Your ceiling may be cracked due to extreme temperature compared to the rest of the house. Keep in mind that higher heat can lead to cracking in ceiling joints. Large ceiling frames can sag and cause a drywall separation.

  • Doors are sticking on the Handle Side of the Door

People think of foundation issues whenever the notice door sticks to a certain part of the house. There is a possibility that the door sticks on the handle side of the door rather than on the top or hinge side.

This sign indicates a problem with the door hinges, not the foundation. You can look at the open door frame for rubbing points or see if there is any gap between the door and the frame. The other false signs are flaws in concrete surfaces or floor tiles and nail pops and seam breaks on interior walls.
